Microsoft Launches IE8 With History Of Internet Vid

I haven’t used Internet Explorer in oh, about 5 years, and I probably won’t again (ever), but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy this potentially viral video Microsoft released celebrating the launch of Internet Explorer 8.
This LOL-worthy video campaign takes us on a trip down Internet memory lane and features cameos from B-list comedians, web-celebs, and clips from classic viral vids and websites (hello, Chawlee Bit Me & the Hamster Dance!) Microsoft seems to be relying heavily on the influential power of social media to help promote IE8, and have even setup a website to encourage sharing.
In my opinion, this definitely beats the Bill Gates + Jerry Seinfeld #fail campaign last year. That being said, it doesn’t excuse the fact that the browser has been… le suck compared to Firefox.
Here are the new features to reportedly increase speed and enhance security:

- -Accelerators, right-click functionality to map directions, translate words, email your friends and more.
-InPrivate browsing designed to shield your browser history (they say shopping, I say embarrassing Google searches/porn).
-Web Slices, which appears to be a “create your own iGoogle” via your toolbar.
-Search suggestions, self-explanatory yet helpful.
-SmartScreen, filters to protect you from potentially harmful websites.
See more about IE8 here.
Do you think this campaign, or the features, will give IE8 the boost it needs?

Showing my age here(if I was a fine wine, I’d be delicious!) but I remember when home access to the internet started. Before the internet, BBSs were all the rage.
The first browser was Mosiac and in it’s day it was hawt. Then Netscape 1.0 came out. It had this big pulsing N up in the right hand corner that would mesmerize you so you didn’t notice it took over a minute to download the 75k web page.
Netscape dominated web browsing for a long time until Microsoft decided it wanted to get in the game. Using it’s heavy handed methods, it caught up and squeezed out Netscape. I think it had to do alot with a bit of a stall in web site technology due to a limit on bandwidth by the home user. As high speed internet became more common in the household, web development technology took off again. Really opening the door for Firefox to shine.
Now MS is playing catch up again, and history will surely repeat itself and MS will play dirty. They already are. You see MS used Windows Update to push a service pack to their .Net framework. What his update also does, but doesn’t tell anyone is it installs a .Net Framework assistant in your Firefox. This add-on basically adds one of the big vulnerabilities IE had — allowing websites to install software on your PC — which is the reason many(like me) use Firefox! And to top it all off the uninstall option of this “add-on” is greyed out! So uninstalling this “feature” isn’t a simple process.
As far as IE 8 is concerned. It’s OK. They’ve improved it a tad over IE7, but Firefox is still a better browers by far. The only reason I use IE is because at work, we have modules/admin consoles that only work in IE.
