A Dress Made Entirely Out Of Coffee Filters

By Sarah, June 29, 2009 11:01 pm

Great googly moogly. This has nothing to do with technology but I don’t care because this is my blog and I’ll write about what I want. So there! This dress is made entirely from coffee filters… which is very green, but also sounds a little scratchy. It’s surprisingly cute.

The dress is made by an 18 year-old girl named Aimee Kick, an aspiring fashion designer from Missouri who is apparently KICKing butt. She wore this little number to her prom. SMILE, Aimee, you’re famous!

This reminds me of one of the first runway shows I ever did, back in Richmond, VA in 2001… yes, it was a very long time ago. The show was called ‘Wearable Art’ and I wore a dress made out of metal washers, hinges, bolts, screws, etc. It sold for $2500.

It also reminds me of my senior prom. My Mom made my dress, it was yellow, sparkly, and gorgeous – but that’s not the funny part. I decided to be like, totally, stylish to crimp my hair. This turned out to be not such a great idea after all, but I only discovered it when it was too late to go back and start over. So I went to the prom with puffy eyes from crying and hair that looked like a lampshade. At least my Mom thought I looked beautiful. But who gives a care about high school anyway? Glory days my butt!

Even Plants Have Cell Phones These Days

By Sarah, June 4, 2009 4:49 am

I may be a half-way decent blogger, but I am a sorry excuse for a plant owner. Anything green that comes into my house has a 95% chance of dying within a month. What? At least I’m honest.

Surely I’m not what the guys at Agrihouse had in mind when they developed the microchip that allows your plant to text you when it needs water.

plantcellphone

“It’s akin to a clip on earring, very thin and smaller than a postage stamp, and is affixed to the plant leaf,” said Richard Stoner, President of AgriHouse, a company marketing the technology.
“The farmer would just need their regular cell phone service, and the plant would send a text message when it needed water.”

Though it may be years before such a product is available to individuals like myself, it would extremely useful (and economical) to Western US farmers responsible for thousands of acres of crops that currently use water-conserving underground aquifers for hydration. Or even for NASA scientists attempting to grow plant life on other planets (the original purpose of the plant cell phone).

“You need plants on future space missions,” said Hans-Dieter Seelig, a scientist at the University of Colorado at Boulder who worked on the original NASA project.

Environmentally Friendly Cardboard Speakers

By Sarah, December 12, 2007 7:23 pm

My post on Recycled Circuit Boards & CDs Turned Ornaments caused such a stir in the comments, I couldn’t resist posting about these Cardboard Speakers, and reading your feedback.

The environmentally-friendly factor makes up for the uglyness of these speakers, since they are made out of 100% recycled materials. These battery-free speakers fold flat for easy storage and portability. I feel I can safely assume that the sound quality isn’t going to be the best out there, but surely they get the job done. It’d be interested to see just how well they work, or how long they last.

They won’t break the bank either, at only $15 a set.

Power Up With Sunshine

By Sarah, February 23, 2007 2:42 pm

Nowadays you can’t leave the house without your personal gadget collection, including cellphone, iPod, GPS, PDA, game player, digicam, etc, etc, need I go on?  Dealing with all the power supplies can get obnoxious, especially if you are on-the-go or gone for long periods of time.

Next time, take the Solio Solar Charger with you.  B000hhod5416_sclzzzzzzz_ss384_
After absorbing 8-10 hours of direct sunlight (cut that time in half by plugging it into a power source), it has enough energy to charge all your necessary devices.  It stores the sun’s power in the internal fully integrated Lithiom-Ion battery, so all you have to do is attach a cable, push a button, and get instant energy.   It holds enough juice to fully charge your cell phone at least once or an iPod twice.  And don’t worry about it losing the "sun power" – it stores leftover energy for up to a year.

It’s got a pretty sweet design, just spread out the blades to get maximum exposure to the sun (it
even comes with suction cups so you can stick it to the window of your home or car).  Also included are the Solio battery charger, Nokia tip, Motorola tip, Samsung tip, mini-USB
tip, interchangeable tip system cable, USB cable, 12-volt universal
adapter, global travel charger with adapters and users manual.

Cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and of course, it’s pink.
