What The Heck Kind Of Advertising Is This? A-Hole vs B-Hole

By Sarah, July 12, 2009 5:33 pm

Once again, this has nothing to do with technology but this is my blog and I’ll rant if I want to, so suck it up and read on. What the heck kind of commercial is this? Hardee’s (better known as Carl’s Jr. to us West Coasters*) is pimping out their new Biscuit Holes – which I guess are like donut holes, but with icing. Scrumptious and healthy, I’m sure.

They took to the streets to ask people what they like better: A-holes, or B-holes? Sick!

Since when did advertising become all about sex? Ok, stupid question, but really – as if it weren’t bad enough seeing a razor company coyly hinting at the shape of your hair “down there,” or an internet company suggesting that your husband’s addiction to internet porn makes you wanna barf, now we’re comparing breakfast pastries to… well, you can use your imagination.

Edited to add: Not sure how I forgot this gem of a Burger King ad. What are we selling here? Is this a sandwich ad, or pornography?

Smile!

I suppose it works, though – I am blogging about it, after all. Woo Hardee’s!

*Ahh! Did I just call myself a “West Coaster?!?” Somebody. Get. Me. Out. Of. Here.

Netflix To Stream Direct On Sony Bravia HDTVs

Netflix has already already revolutionized the way we rent movies. On a recent trip to Nashville, I walked into a Blockbuster for the first time in years. It was full of VHS tapes DVDs with faded cover artwork, and I truly felt like I was in a museum. Remember the days when your video renting options were limited to what hadn’t already been chosen? “Aw, man! All that’s left is Beethoven’s 5th.” (Loved those movies.)

sony-netflix

In addition to renting-by-mail, streaming movies on your computer, and renting via TiVo and Xbox 360, Netflix is giving subscribers an even more seamless way to view movies this fall. Owners of the new internet-enabled Sony Bravia HDTVs will be able to stream Netflix movies right on their telly with the click of the button.

Older Bravia models will work, too, using the Bravia Internet Link box.

How easy is that? Fast forward five years and we will be guffaw-ing over those silly red envelopes, as every TV will be Netflix-enabled.

Interior Design Geek Chic. A Circuit Board Rug.

By Sarah, July 2, 2009 12:30 pm

I’m currently obsessed with the idea of decorating my apartment (which I pay an arm and a leg for… though it is quite beautiful) and although I probably wouldn’t incorporate this latch hook circuit board rug into the overall look, it is pretty amazing.

geekrug

It looks super soft… and is impressively similar to the actual circuit board it was modeled after.

circuitboard

Now that’s a great looking circuit board. I would definitely hang a photo of that on my wall.

Dreaming Of RSS Feeds? This Pillow's For You.

By Sarah, June 4, 2009 5:10 am

This is pure brilliance. When I saw this RSS logo pillow, I instantly thought of my girlfriend and co-worker Lauren, who is notorious for browsing Google Reader from bed upon waking up and playing Bejeweled 2 in bed before sleeping, two habits that I have picked up on on occasion.

Sadly, you won’t be catching any news or blog feeds with this pillows (though that’s not such a bad idea), just a few zzz’s.

rsspillow

You can get your own on Etsy (love that site) for $14.99.

Pair this with a binary code blanket and we’ve got ourselves a geeky yet cozy little nest.

Earthquake Aftermath Foreshadows Web 3.0?

By Sarah, July 30, 2008 12:37 pm

Oh my GOODNESS, yes I am still alive. I recently started writing another blog – for SocialVibe – and I have been a horrible mother to TechDarling. Please forgive me? I’m back. I will update on the regular I swear, just please don’t leave me.

Ok I’m done begging. Let’s see, lots of new tech stuff happened in the last month or so, including the iPhone 3G – which I’ve had the opportunity to play with. For the first time in my life I actually WANT one, which is crazy, because I’m a die-hard iPhone-Hater. Maybe it’s because of the fabulous accessories that you can dress it up in. But I’m more interested in the fabulous accessories INSIDE of it. They have all these amazing applications, for Facebook, Twitter, etc. That and my Blackberry Curve has been acting a fool the past few weeks. It’s only a year old!

Moving on, we had an earthquake today here in LA and I’m going to be honest, I’ve never experienced something so exhilarating/terrifying in my life. I was on the 11th floor of a high-rise and the entire building started swaying and shaking. I thought for sure I was going out the glass wall that I was sitting a mere six inches from. But alas, I made it out alive.

The aftermath was the crazy part…. almost instantaneously, all of my social networks began going off like firecrackers with updates about the earthquake. “Did u feel that?!?!” “Earthquake!” “That was at least a 5 or 6-er” Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, I had at LEAST 20 IMs in 10 minutes. The actual quake wasn’t that bad, but the flood of communication that came after was what REALLY shook us up. The cellphone networks weren’t working for hours afterward.

It’s true what they say… the future is mobile. Web 3.0, my friends. I know this because I am a victim of this disease. Every time I go somewhere, do something funny, see something unusual, etc, immediately I want to let my network know. I met Magic Johnson a couple of weeks ago and the first thing I did was post it on Twitter. My entire office is on Twitter and sometimes I catch us using it for inter-office communication! It’s not just Tweets that have got me and the rest of the world crazy… there are countless other devices and applications that make computing-on-the-go easy as pie.

And in keeping with the mobile theme of this post, I’d like to talk about out a very smart alarm clock.

tyrant-alarm-clock

The Tyrant, by Alice Wang. It is a damn tyrant, because if you don’t get up when it starts ringing, it kindly picks 3 contacts from your mobile address book at random and calls them every 3 minutes to let them know just what a lazy bastard you are. My friends would haaate this, as would the countless other random contacts in my phone. And since I am a regular at sleeping through my alarm, I’m going to guess it would happen quite often. What? I’m just not a morning person.

Thanks to my very good friend Matt for telling me about this one. I think he thought of me because he used to be my roommate and witnessed me sleeping literally all day on the regular.

How Far Would You Go For a Little Privacy?

By Sarah, April 16, 2008 7:27 pm

Wow. I have to thank my coworker Ben for providing me with this glorious gem. He is lucky enough to experience firsthand, on a daily basis, my rants on how this office is freezing, and how loud and annoying my mostly male coworkers are. (Not to question their masculinity, saying they are only “mostly” male, but rather there this office is made up of 98% men. Moving on…)

wooly-laptop-jumper

I absolutely need this. Never one to be afraid to try something new or stand out in a crowd, I think I’m the perfect guinea pig for the Body-Laptop Wooly Jumper. BTW. Jumper? Did a British person name this thing? Sure it’s ridiculous looking. Sure you probably can’t see a single thing you are doing. Sure the lighting probably leaves something to be desired. But look at it! Something that hilarious cannot go un-used. Imagine the awesome hat-hair that I’d have after using that… hot!

Another fave: The Scarf for Tech-Addicts. Because wearing a scarf and gloves while holding your Blackberry just isn’t complicated enough.

Please, someone send me this, I am more than willing to do a video demonstration.

I want nothing more than to drink an entire bottle of Nyquil and go to bed right now, but these little darlings are truly brightening my day. Thank you Ben!

Are Your Gadgets Making You Sick?

By Sarah, April 15, 2008 4:22 pm

This is a particularly sub-par Tuesday for me, seeing as I’m feeling under the weather. It could be the unpredictable LA weather – which keeps switching from 100 degrees to 60 degrees, or it could be too much pool partying this weekend, but regardless, I feel less than glamorous today!

sick

In the spirit of my mood, I found this interesting article on how our overwhelmingly frequent, everyday use of gadgets may be making us sick!

Are Your Gadgets Making You Sick?

From sore thumbs, acne, vision problems, and low sperm count (Yikes!) – I myself suffer from more than one of these ailments (not the sperm count). It’s got tips on how to prevent each of these problems, and I for one am open to the advice!

It’s worth a look!

Waterproof LCD TVs for Indoor or Outdoor Use

By Sarah, January 30, 2008 2:05 pm

The first thing that popped into my head while reading the words “Waterproof TV” was a wild fraternity house, and cans of beer being shaken and sprayed all over the walls. Why else would you need a waterproof TV?! I suppose there is the off chance of a leak, or a flood, a kitchen mishap, or some other unfortunate water damage, but the thought of beer flying all over is much more entertaining.

soak

The cleverly named Soak TV line features Waterproof LCDs for use indoors or outdoors, which means you can use it near your pool with no worries that it will be damaged. It comes with the option of hooking up a PC or DVD player, as well as stereo speakers.

The Soak TV line isn’t available for purchase yet, but hopefully will be by summertime. Pricing only available for one model, the Soak104, which is ¬£494.95

I’m actually surprised that I haven’t seen something like this before. If your love of pink is so deep that it transcends into your home decor, then this is definitely the TV for you.

This 32″ Sony Bravia LCD TV comes in the fabulously named “Cosmo Pink.” But don’t let it’s outsides fool you – this TV is no wuss. It’s got several smart features such as a light sensor that adjust screen brightness to match the lighting in your living room, a freeze function (pause for those of you without TiVo), front surround-sound, an award winning on-screen navigation system, as well as hook-ups to stream internet using Bravia’s Internet Video Link module (sold separately).

This pretty in pink TV can be yours for around $1,100, and will be available for pre-orders on October 31.
