Apple Blocks iTunes From Syncing With Palm Pre

By Sarah, July 15, 2009 1:52 pm

So mean. I’m not even a Palm Pre user and I still think this sucks. Apple released iTunes version 8.2.1 today, and with it comes a nice little blockade preventing Pre users from syncing their music libraries. Now that’s a low blow.

The release notes include a blurb stating, “iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple Devices.”

I suppose fair is fair… but still, this is pure evil. Dieter from precentral.net suggests Pre users check out doubleTwist for music syncing until this gets worked out, if ever.

I’ve only heard good things about the Pre, which we shall call “iPhone #2,” and although I wouldn’t give up my iPhone for anything, there are many times when I want to punch AT&T squarely in between the eyes for its lack of service.

Microsoft's Zune HD Complete With Touch Screen and Web Browser

By Sarah, May 27, 2009 5:31 pm

Ooh la la. Microsoft is jazzing up the otherwise blasé Zune for the next generation model by including features such as a touch screen and a web browser.

The new device, named Zune HD, will also feature high-def video output that will allow people to play files through a docking station on HD televisions. The touch screen will use organic light-emitting diodes, which will not only produce better image quality, but improve battery life.

The Zune HD will be the first portable media player with a receiver for HD radio, so stations can transmit extra channels alongside regular broadcasts. It’ll be released this fall. No news on capacity or pricing yet!

The iPod still reigns supreme, but this is a nice improvement nonetheless.

Tweet Your Favorite Songs With Song.ly

By Sarah, May 24, 2009 1:12 am

I spend about equal parts of my time online (and offline) using Twitter and listening to music. When I heard about Song.ly, the service that allows you to share mp3s with your tweets, my initial reaction was “duh, that’s brilliant.” Now let’s see if it actually works.

I had just done my weekly sweep of the Stereogum feed and tested Song.ly using a new mp3 I found – Here We Go Magic – Tunnelvision.

It works like this:

    1. Copy the mp3 URL of the song you want to share.
    2. Visit Song.ly and paste into the space provided.
    3. Test the pop-up player to make sure it’s working.
    4. Click the green button that says “Tweet.”

Your Twitter followers will be able to click the compacted URL, which will take them to Song.ly, where they can then listen to the tune… though it doesn’t seem they can easily download it, which would be a nice bonus.

Here’s a message from the co-founder of Song.ly:

Looks like my Twitter followers will be hearing a lot more of what I’m listening to. If you think Song.ly is awesome too, vote for them in TechCrunch’s Elevator Pitch contest.

Play Music To Suit Your Mood, Colorsonic MP3 Player

By Sarah, February 6, 2009 9:42 pm

There’s nothing worse than being in a crap mood and wasting valuable sulk-time by searching for an appropriate playlist to sulk to. Thank the heavens for Colorsonic – an mp3 player that plays music to suit your mood!

co2

First of all, it’s teeny tiny – about the size of a quarter. Second of all, it’s rainbow colored and has a magnetic hole in the middle to hold your earbuds.

“Music is loaded to the Colorsonic like an ordinary MP3 player and converts the songs to color associations chosen by the user. Colors are assigned individual emotional states and playlists correlating to those states can later be accessed by selecting that color on the device.”

Now you can be sad, angry, energetic, in love, or whatever emotion you like – and have an automatic playlist ready. Aside from that, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of pausing, skipping songs, or any of the other fancyness that comes with traditional mp3 players.

Unfortunately, we have no idea where or when you can buy this, or how much for. But still – it’s a pretty cool concept. Would you buy it?

iBangle: Wear Your Music Around Your Wrist

By Sarah, October 28, 2008 9:38 pm

The iPod just celebrated it’s 7th anniversary, and though it may seem as though this portable media player has come a long way since it was first released, the general design and guts have stayed pretty much the same (give or take half an inch).

Which is why I’m totally open to the iBangle (currently only a concept.)

ibangle

Skinny wrists like me? One press of that blue button fills the blue area with air so it fits nice and snugly around your wrist (hopefully not to the point of cutting off blood circulation).

Do you have any idea how much easier this would make running? I’m not a fan of those armbands… my hands flail around far too much while running and half the time my ear buds get yanked out of my poor little ears. With the iBangle, you wouldn’t even need ear buds. It’s bluetooth enabled, so all you would need is one of those hideous earpieces – Wait! Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.. after all… fashion first!

Annoy Your Friends, Play the Drums on Your T-Shirt

By Sarah, September 26, 2008 12:27 pm

I’m a big fan of any silly, seemingly useless tech products, and ThinkGeek is known for making some of the best, so I automatically adore them (it doesn’t hurt that they are based out of Fairfax, VA – my birthplace). One of their latest products – the electronic drum kit t-shirt – is hilarious, and brilliant.

Finally! A way for me to practice my drumming skills without having to drag my bulky drum kit around. Totally kidding by the way, I don’t play any instruments, I’m devoid of any musical talent. But I might inconspicuously send this to my neighbor, who insists on practicing drums in his garage which just so happens to be right next to my apartment. Quite the treat at 11:30pm when you’re trying to sleep.

You're Nobody If You're Not On Twitter – The Song

By Sarah, September 24, 2008 3:05 am

Who isn’t on Twitter these days? My good friend Peter was just whining to me that even his Mom is on Twitter, much to his disappointment. You’re nobody if you’re not on Twitter, at least according to this guy!

And as a proud internet and gadget geek of many, many years, I completely agree. :)

Interesting Fact Of The Day: Music Thieves

By Sarah, April 12, 2008 4:14 pm

Only 1% of the music on iPods is filled with songs downloaded from iTunes.

On average, only 24 songs on each iPod are paid for directly. The rest are either illegally downloaded or ripped from CDs.

JVC Marshmallow – Cute, Cheap Headphones

By Sarah, April 8, 2008 6:47 pm

I’m going to be 100% honest here, I have had to replace my noise canceling earbuds twice already this year. Not because they were bad quality, but rather because my cat chewed through the cord. Twice. Thus, I will not be spending a lot of money on said ear buds any longer, for fear my cat will eat them for lunch.

I have had a pair of generic, pink, JVC “Gumy” earbuds for a while and they are – lets just say, undesirable. I mean, they get the job done, but I work with men. Loud men. I need something that is going to be efficient in blocking out the chatter!

Cue JVC Marshmallow Earbuds. For about $20, you get a pair of comfortable, efficient, and lets be truthful, quite nice looking, noise canceling headphones. I may be partial because I have now been able to regain my sanity with these (i.e., the NOISE is gone!), but all in all a great little product in my opinion. Don’t like pink? No problem, they come in white, black, green, blue, red, purple, etc.
